10 FAKE TAN FAILS & HOW TO FIX THEM FEATURING SKINNY TAN

There’s no denying it! We’ve all had fake tan fails and had no clue how to fix them. Whether it’s stained white sheets, missed spots on our back or the dreaded orange palms. There’s lessons to be learnt and tips and tricks to save us from a tan emergency.

Since trying Skinny Tan’s new look range I thought it’s a great time to share some of my favourite tanning tips. So here they are…

1. TOO PATCHY?

The key to getting an even tan is too exfoliate before application. Use either an oil free body scrub, exfoliating mitt or tan primer. Focus on dry areas such as your ankles, knees and elbows. Don’t forget to moisturise these areas immediately before fake tanning too as this will help prevent any patchiness.

{Skinny Tans primer naturally exfoliates, helps tan go on evenly and extends the life of your tan. RRP $12.95}

2. DIRTY SHEETS?

After tanning it’s best to wear long sleeve loose dark clothing or tanning wear. If your tan is still sticky and your worried it will stain your sheets try applying some baby powder with an old fluffy makeup brush over it before going to bed. It will absorb any moisture and prevent those nasty sheet stains.

3. TOO DARK?

Do your product research and patch test first. Most tans come in light and dark versions. Don’t forget to read the application instructions and developing times too as not all brands are the same. Remember less time equals a lighter tan. If your a beginner try using a gradual tan to build up the colour slowly.

{Skinny Tans gradual tanner is perfect for a subtle buildable colour. It’s rich formula is perfect as a daily moisturiser and can be applied to the face aswell as body. RRP $19.95}

4. FADING TO QUICK?

The best way to prevent your tan from fading is to moisturise often. Stay away from long hot baths or pools and always pat your self dry after a shower instead of rubbing. Steer clear of harsh body washes too as these can wear down your tan.

5. STAINED PALMS?

Always use a mitt to apply your tan! Not only will it prevent stained hands but it will ensure a smooth, streak-free and even application. For tricky areas like your fingers and toes use an old fluffy makeup brush to apply the tan. To remove tan off stained hands mix lemon juice with some salt and sugar to scrub off.

{Skinny Tans dual tanning mitt is essential for a streak free tan. It will keep hands stain-free and can be washed and re-used. RRP $9.95}

6. CAN’T REACH YOUR BACK?

Rather than nagging your boyfriend to do it the easiest way is to find something with a long handle like a body brush or large paddle hair brush. Put your tanning mit on the end and secure it with a hair tie. Genius I know!

7. ALLERGIC REACTION?

Some tans contain nasty chemicals and can irritate sensitive or dry skin. Look for a product with a plant based DHA and natural soothing ingredients like coconut oil or aloe vera. Try to avoid products with alcohol and parabens. If your worried it’s best to patch test before applying. Too late? Wash off your tan immediately with a gentle cleanser.

{All of Skinny Tan’s products contain natural DHA, are paraben and sulphate free and have added guarana to help reduce the appearance of cellulite.}

8. BROWN SPOTS?

This is the fake tan that has settled into your open pores. It’s best to shave or wax 24hrs before fake tanning to allow the hair follicles to close. If you’ve left it to late and you can’t wait 24hrs simply hold an ice pack on your legs to help close your pores quicker.

9. ORANGE LIKE AN OOMPA LOOMPA?

Moderation is the key! Don’t apply anymore than 2 layers of tan. (If your naturally pale only apply one) Choose professionally developed products not cheap ones and always opt for green based formulas.

10. CAN’T GET IT OFF?

Take a long hot bath mixed with some body oil. This will soften the skin and break down the tan. Follow with an exfoliation mitt in circular motions. Alternatively use a specifically made fake tan remover.

{Skinny Tans Exfoliating mitt has 2 sides. Orange for preparing the skin before tanning and brown to assist in removing your tan. RRP $12.95}

Well there you have it! Hope you found something new to try when tanning and know how to fix some of the common tanning fails.
