BUILDING YOUR FIRST MAKEUP ARTIST KIT

One of the most exciting things about becoming a Makeup Artist is building your first makeup kit. From brushes to blushes and everything in between your first makeup kit should consist of products that you feel confident working with, are affordable to purchase and give great results. It’s said that as a Mua your makeup kit is your biggest expense so it’s important to pick your products wisely.

Here’s a few things to ask yourself when buying makeup for your kit!

1. Do I need it? When it comes to makeup it’s very easy to impulse buy. Whether you’ve seen it on Instagram, read great reviews or are tempted by a sale there’s no need to buy it if you don’t need it.

2. How often will I use it? It’s important not to over fill your makeup kit with products that will not be used. Not only will they make your case heavy but will make it harder to find the things you do use often!

3. Can I afford it? As you gain more experience as a makeup artist your makeup kit will change too. It’s totally fine to use drugstore makeup brands in your kit and work your way up to more expensive items. As long as the product works well for you it doesn’t matter!

SOME OF MY MAKEUP KIT FAVOURITES

BRUSHES

A great makeup application has a lot to do with the tools you use. When it comes to brushes you will need a set that will last! Sorry to break it to you but your going to be washing these over and over again.

I love the Real Techniques makeup brushes because they are affordable and effective. The quality is great and the bristles are super soft. I also like how the handles are different colours making the right brush easier to find when you need it. The range is really good and easy to purchase at your local Priceline store.

PRIMER & FOUNDATION

For a smooth base and long lasting makeup application a skin primer is essential. Foundation’s for you kit will need to have good coverage, a nice finish and be long lasting.

While doing my makeup course with Alex Fevola’s Runway Room Academy I fell in love with the Runway Room Face Base Foundation. It has a gorgeous glowy finish and a medium to full coverage. It’s perfect for my makeup kit because it comes in lightweight tubes and easy to mix shades.

CLEANSING PRODUCTS

Starting with a clean base is the key to flawless looking skin. Before applying any makeup it’s essential to cleanse the skin. The easiest way to do this is with some cotton pads and micellar water.

I couldn’t live without my Swisspers cotton pads. They come in a great variety of sizes and are better quality than cheaper brands. The unique stitching around the edges means they don’t fall apart or leave fluff on your clients faces! I also like to keep a pack of makeup wipes and cotton tips in my kit to help clean up any makeup mistakes.

MASCARA

Like icing on a cake mascara is the finishing touch to open up the eyes. It’s a good idea to keep a black and brown option in your kit along with one that is waterproof.

I’ve really been loving Arbonne’s ‘It’s a long story mascara’ I find it gives great length, is long lasting and doesn’t clump. It holds a curl well and is water-resistant. Made with natural ingredients it nourishes the lashes and helps them grow.

REMEMBER

No makeup artists kit is the same! And that’s what makes them special! Use the products that you like and own it!

You don’t have to use expensive brands to get good results. Your application technique alone can make your makeup look amazing.

It’s never ending! Your always going to be purchasing new products and trying different brands. You don’t have to have everything at the start, it will grow with your business.

Most importantly have fun with it! All the best on your Makeup Artist journey!
